Festival Round up by Thump

Two fantastic articles from Thump rounding up the festival - check them out here:

David Garber:

Logistically, making MANANA happen had presented a veritable Rubik's cube of challenges, including months of meetings with the Cuban culture board, hashing out how the event would benefit local musicians and the city's historic scene.

Greg Scruggs:

But if sweeping change is coming to Cuba's music scene, it makes sense for it to begin in Santiago. The city has historically been the site of new beginnings.

Resident Advisor Top 10 Festivals - May 2016!

Manana features in Resident Advisor's Top 10 festivals for May 2016! In their words:

The end of the US embargo of Cuba was an historic event, and Manana festival is taking the opportunity to bring the island's rich music culture into contact with electronic music from across the globe. Running from May 4th to 6th in Santiago De Cuba, Manana will pair local artists with international guests for collaborative performances that'll see unknown Afro-Cuban artists interacting with names like Plaid. Gifted & Blessed is one of those teaming with Cuban musicians, while On-U Sound head Adrian Sherwood will perform with Skip McDonald. A Guy Called Gerald and Nicolas Jaar are two of the biggest acts on the bill, but it's the local artists who'll give Manana its unique flavour.

RA Pick: Ariwo is a Cuban/Iranian trio that sounds like Shackleton stranded on a desert island.

New Technology Partner: Native Instruments

Following on from Elektron's donations last week, we are now delighted to confirm that leading software and hardware manufacturer, Native Instruments, have pledged their support to the Manana project by providing a Maschine Studio and Komplete 10 Ultimate.

We will be running workshops with local producers and musicians in the weeks leading up to the festival, and the equipment will be left in Santiago following the festival.

We’re hugely grateful to Native Instruments for their vision and support for Manana.

Manana 2016 opens with Fania Stage

We are delighted to announce that legendary US label, Fania, will be curating a stage on the opening day of Manana 2016 - featuring global bass DJ collective Calentura, LA DJ/Producer Jose Marquez, Uproot Andy from Que Bajo!? and more...

Michael Rucker, Fania CMO wrote:

"Fania is excited to a be a part of Manana, the first international electronic music festival to be held in Santiago de Cuba, because Cuban and tropical music is an integral part of where we come from and the foundation for all of the wonderful music this brand has shared with the world for more than 50 years. It’s an honor to be apart of this groundbreaking event and we're looking forward to many more to come."

Check out Calentura's new album, Global Bassment, featuring both Jose Marquez and Uproot Andy. Remezcla calls it an album which "opens an amazing future for the next generation of Latin-inspired DJ and production stars on the rise" - full article here.

New Technology Partner: Elektron

Manana is committed to supporting Santiago de Cuba's historic musical scene, so we are delighted to welcome on board iconic Swedish electronic instrument manufacturer, Elektron, to help us achieve that goal.

They will be donating an Analog Four and an Analog Rytm - a splendid synthesizer and a flexible one-stop drum machine - which will be left with local studios following the festival. LA based musician, Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker (playing at the festival as Gifted & Blessed) is heading out a week before Manana to collaborate with local musicians and will run demonstrations for them to showcase the potential of the equipment.

Nicolas Jaar is Heading to Manana Festival in Cuba

Since the release of his critically acclaimed debut record 'Space is Only Noise', Chilean-American electronic music sensation Nicolas Jaar has co-founded experimental NYC duo Darkside, set up his own record label, Other People... and now he'll be joining acts like Quantic, Nickodemus, Adrian Sherwood, Plaid, A Guy Called Gerald + many more, at our inaugural Manana Festival in Santiago de Cuba. We can hardly believe it ourselves!
